If you are NOT a tourist looking out for a cliche spot and want crowd-free or less crowded exciting spots near Chennai, you must read this.


Thiruvakkarai Fossil

The National Fossil Wood Park, Tiruvakkarai is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument located in the Villupuram District and is maintained by the Geological Survey of India. The park was established in 1940 and is located 1 km east of Thiruvakkarai village on the road between Tindivanam and Pondicherry.

The park contains petrified wood fossils approximately 20 million years old, scattered throughout the park, which covers about 247 acres (100 ha). The park consists of nine enclaves, but only a small portion of the 247 acres (approx 1 square km) is open to the public


Pulicat Lake (On ISRO Side), ~100 KM From Chennai

Pulicat Lagoon is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India measuring 759 square kilometres, after Chilika Lake,  The lagoon comprises 1) Pulicat Lake (Tamil Nadu-TN & Andhra Pradesh-AP) 2) Marshy/Wetland Land Region (AP) 3) Venadu Reserve Forest (AP) 4) Pernadu Reserve Forest (AP) The lagoon was cut across in the middle by the Sriharikota Link Road (Where Satish Dhawan Space Centre is available), which divided the water body into the lagoon and marshy land. You can plan to be there for the next launch.


Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, Attakanitippa

The lagoon encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary. One can watch a documentary on Flamingos and has a decent restroom. Lake near ISRO is best for birding.


Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary

Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is on the way to Nellore. It's popular for Pelicans.

Srikalahasti Shiva temple is around 50 KM from Sullurpet. There is also the Tada Waterfalls, which is not suitable for comfort travel families as it needs trekking.

Poondi Reservoir

Poondi Reservoir (later named as Sathyamoorthy Sagar) was constructed in 1944 across the Kosathalaiyar River or Kotralai River in Thiruvallur district with a capacity of 2573 Mcft. Surplus water flows down the river which is again intercepted by Tamaraipakkam Anicut and diverted to Sholavaram Lake and Puzhal lake.

Oondreswarar Temple and a Pre-history Museum are nearby. In the pre-history museum, one can see million years old large Snail fossils, taken from Uraiyur near Trichy. It means that the sea was near Trichy million years back. The reservoir has a garden is a popular picnic spot in the region


Newly built Thervoy kandigai reservoir

Thervoy Kandigai reservoir is the fifth major reservoir built to satisfy the drinking water needs of Chennai city. The reservoir was constructed by combining Thervoy Kandigai and Kannankottai lakes in the Thiruvallur district.


Gingee Fort

It is one of the surviving forts in Tamil Nadu. The fort is so fortified, that Chhatrapati Shivaji, the Maratha king, ranked it as the “most impregnable fortress in India” and it was called the “Troy of the East” by the British.

Mudaliarkuppam Boat House



Mudaliarkuppam Boat House, also known as Raindrop Boat House, is a water sports facility located on the East Coast Road, 36 km to the south of Mamallapuram and 92 km from Chennai in India. It was developed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on the Odiyur lake backwaters. It has rowing, cruising, speed boating, water scooting and kayaking facilities.
