The inscriptions and monuments found within the campus indicate that it may have existed as early as the beginning of the 6th century. There has been a debate around the evidence of India contributing Zero to the world. Interestingly, the second oldest record (inscription) of “zero” in the world is found here in the Chaturbhuj Temple, located on the way to the top. There has been an ongoing debate about the origin of Zero across the world. If Gwalior had 2nd oldest, where do we have 1st oldest record of Zero? Many zeros were mentioned in the Bakhshali manuscript, one of the oldest scripts. Carbon dating at the University of Oxford proved script could be of the third or fourth-century scriptript been in the Bodleian Library of Oxford since 1902. The inscription states, among other things, that the community planted a garden of 187 hastas by 270 hastas (1 hasta = 1.5 feet), that the garden yielded 50 garlands for the temple every day. The last digits of 270 and 50 are “O” shaped.
